Darkness on Barkas-Shahinnagar road

Hyderabad. The Barkas-Shahinnagar road, a major route tothe Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA ) in Shamshabad, has become a nightmare for motorists and locals, especially after sunset, due to non-functional street lights and pothole-filled stretches. Street lights on the crucial 4-km stretch from Barkas toPaharisharifhave not been working for several weeks, forcing commuters to navigate dangerous roads in the dark. Non-functioning traffic signals further increase the risk of accidents. While alternative routes like Shamshabad Road and Meerpet-RCI Road have seen rapid development, this stretch remains neglected.

Traffic going to the airport has to face problems

Karim Ansari, a resident of Saadatnagar, said, "Traffic going to the airport faces constant problems on this road." Despite the state government's plan to develop the route to international standards, locals say no significant improvements have been made except partial road widening. Abdul Rauf, a social activist from Shaheennagar, said, "This road looks more like a remote highway than an urban arterial road." The recent rains have worsened the situation.

Pits have turned into stones

Junaid, a businessman from Jalpalli, said, "The potholes have turned into rocks, making two-wheelers prone to skid. "The authorities are not even carrying out basic repairs," he added. Mohammad Asif Iqbal, a resident of Paharisharif, said the road has become extremely dangerous during nights and rains due to lack of lighting. "Accidents occur here on a daily basis," he said. Residents have urged municipal officials and other concerned departments to prioritise repairs, restore lighting and improve safety measures on the stretch to ease movement and prevent further accidents.
