The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck at 12:37 p.m. The epicenter was 87 kilometers south of Sand Point, according to the USGS. The epicenter was 20.1 kilometers deep. The tremors also shook nearby areas.

Officials on alert for tsunami threat

Authorities were alerted immediately after the earthquake. Tsunami warnings were issued for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula. According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, coastal areas are at risk from rising waves. Tsunami warnings were issued from Kennedy Entrance (40 miles south of Homer) to Unimac Pass (80 miles west of Unalaska). People along the Pacific coast are advised to be vigilant.
