Delhi: Artificial rain to prevent air pollution in Delhi.. Arrangements complete
In the wake of the severe increase in air pollution, the government will be experimenting with artificial rain (cloud seeding) in the national capital Delhi in a historic move. This is the first technological experiment to be undertaken in the city of Delhi for the first time in the country.

In the wake of the severe increase in air pollution, the government will be experimenting with artificial rain(cloud seeding) in the national capital Delhi in a historic move. This is the first technological experiment to be undertaken in the city of Delhi for the first time in the country.
What is cloud seeding?
Cloud seeding is a modern technique used in meteorology. It involves inducing rain by spraying chemicals into moisture-laden clouds. The process typically uses silver iodide, sodium chloride (salt), dry ice, or other crystals. These convert water vapor in clouds into long droplets of water, thereby increasing the likelihood of precipitation.
Sirsa said that the Environment Department is undertaking this historic program under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Our goal is to provide clean air to the people of Delhi."This is the fundamental right of every citizen. We are exploring all avenues for this. That is why we are taking a bold step like artificial rain. We hope that this will definitely bring about a change," he expressed confidence.
Experiments between July 4th and 11th
The minister said that the flight plan has been prepared by IIT Kanpur and submitted to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune for technical coordination if the weather conditions are favourable. Conditions are not conducive for cloud seeding till July 3. Hence, we have proposeda window for the launch between July 4 and 11, he explained. Sirsa said that a proposal has been sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to allocate another alternative window so that the launch can be conducted at a later date if the weather conditions are not favourable on these dates.
How are the arrangements for the experiment?
The project, titled 'Demonstration and Evaluation of Cloud Seeding Technology as an Alternative for Pollution Control in Delhi NCR', will involve five aircraft flying in low-security air zones in northwest and outer Delhi. Cessna aircraft will be modified to spray a chemical mixture on clouds. Each aircraft will remain airborne for about 90 minutes and cover an area of ??100 square kilometres. Developed by IIT Kanpur, the mixture contains silver iodide nanoparticles, iodized salt and rock salt. Spraying this mixture on moisture-laden clouds will cause water droplets to form quickly, creating artificial rain.
Political criticism, government response:
Minister Sirsa responded strongly to the criticism made by Aam Aadmi Party Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj that the BJP had mocked the proposal of artificial rain and was now conducting the experiment after coming to power. We were the first to sign the agreement for artificial rain. We were the ones who paid the necessary funds to IIT Kanpur and applied for the permissions. Because we have integrity, he clarified. Sirsa said that the previous government was limited to words only and that they had reached the point of finalizing the date for this experiment within four months of coming to power.
